The Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne supported the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Victoria (CLTAV) in its annual Chinese Reading Award (for Second Language Speakers) on October 16th 2020.

Sixty-six participants from across the State competed in three groups, i.e. Year 7 Group, Year 8 Group and Year 9 Group. It was the first time that this competition was run online. The participants were put into different breakout rooms where they were given a passage. After 15 minutes’ preparation, they were invited back to the main room and read the passage aloud in front of the judges, the teachers and other contestants.

It was observed that this online competition attracted more contestants from the State than 2019, especially those from regional Victorian schools. The CLTAV considered the inclusion of online option for future language competitions.
