The 7th online professional development workshop was delivered on June 11th 2020. Grace Wen and Shane Huang shared their excellent practice in the implementation of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in their in P-6 classes. “By engaging with meaningful content in/through the target language, not only can the students develop practical language skills and master content knowledge and concepts, but also they can develop their higher-order thinking and a high level of intercultural understanding”, Shane introduced.

The Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria and the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne jointly hosted seven online workshops in May and June, focusing on three areas: the VCE study design, online teaching and innovative methodology in teaching Chinese as a second/foreign language. These workshops were well received by the Victorian Chinese language teachers. A total number of 946 teachers attended this online series.

One participating teacher shared, “Thank you so much for organizing these workshops. I have learnt a lot from the presentations and the experience sharing among the teachers. Moreover, I live in regional Victoria and it has been challenging for me to attend face-to-face workshops on the evenings of weekdays. I believe these online Zoom workshops have greatly benefitted teachers like myself. I also feel better connected with all the other colleagues during this special period of time”.

The Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria and the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne are in discussion of offering more online professional development opportunities to the Victorian Chinese Language Teachers in the second half of 2020.
