CI invites you to attend a panel discussion on everyone's favourite program "If You Are the One". This talk will explore the social phenomenon of the show and why it's become so popular in Australia. Panellists will also analyse modern day Chinese society through the lens of the show.

The event will feature a panel discussion from expert China commentator Peter Cai, Editor, China Spectator; Dr Jing Han, Manager, Subtitling & Program Preparation, SBS, who has translated over 150 episodes of the show and will also feature insights from a former contestant, Joe Sweeney.

About If You Are the One

China's most popular dating show has become a cultural phenomenon since being aired by SBS Australia. Over 50 million viewers worldwide enjoy watching each episode where a single male contestant will try and impress the panel of 24 eligible women, who can register their interest or disinterest via their podium lights in front of them. It's fun, energetic, entertaining and offers and fascinating insight into modern China.

Speaker Biographies

Dr Jing Han received her BA in English from Lanzhou University and MA in English Literature from Beijing Foreign Studies University. She came to Australia in 1988 to do her PhD in English literature at University of Sydney and received her doctoral degree in 1995.

Dr Han joined SBS TV in 1996 as a Mandarin subtitler and she is now the head of  SBS Subtitling Department. Over the last 19 years, she has subtitled more than 300 Chinese films and TV programs for the Australian audience, including Dangerous Liaison, Sacrifice, Painted Skin, Under the Hawthorn Tree, Forever Enthralled, Aftershock, Crazy Racer, Lust, Caution, Let the Bullet Fly, The Assembly, The Curse of Golden Flower, If You Are the One , Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, The Banquet, Crazy Stone, Not One Less, The Road Home, Blind Shaft, Beijing Bicycle, Together, Springtime in A Small Town, The Blue Kite, etc and in the last two years more than 150 episodes of the very popular Chinese TV series If You Are the One.

Dr Han also lectures at University of Western Sydney, teaching translation studies. As a leading expert in translation and intercultural communications, Dr Han Dr Han has presented frequently at conferences in Europe, Australia and China. She has recently completed English translation of the famous Chinese writer Ye Xin’s novel Debt of Love.

Joe Sweeney

Joe visited China for the first time in 2008 and was captivated by the richness of Chinese culture and the warmth of its people. Eager to learn more about China he commenced a Diploma of Modern Languages (Chinese) whilst also studying a Bachelor of Laws at Monash University. Joe has engaged with China for many years and through his Chinese language studies he has experienced many unique situations, including representing Australia at the 2011 ‘International Chinese Bridge Language Competition’ in Changsha, Hunan. Joe was also invited to speak to delegates at the 2012 ‘Victoria in the Asia Century Conference’ about the benefits of learning an Asian language. In 2014 Joe competed in the ‘Jiangsu Cup Chinese Language Speech Contest’ at Melbourne University and was awarded first prize. Whilst living in China in 2013 he was a contestant on the popular match-making TV show ‘If You Are The One’, which captures an audience of approximately 50 million viewers per episode. Joe’s “15 minutes of fame” on this show gave him insight into the social phenomena of televised match-making in China, which he is pleased to share.

Peter Cai

Peter Cai is a journalist with Business Spectator and The Australian. Before he joined Business Spectator, he was a reporter with The Age and Sydney Morning Herald covering Asian Affairs and telecommunications.  He also worked as a policy officer with Commonwealth Treasury in Canberra. 

He has degrees from both Oxford and University of Adelaide.
