Learn Chinese in a Business Setting
Objectives:
This course is designed to assist business people who have never learned or have just begun learning basic Chinese to develop basic communication skills in Chinese business settings. Students who complete this course will:
- have a basic understanding of Chinese language and its culture
- perform basic greetings and expressions for daily commercial communication
- be equipped with skills for polite social interaction
- recognise and write at least 30-50 Chinese characters
- have some awareness of issues in Sino-Australian cross-cultural communication

Mr. Kevin Yang
Coordinator & Instructor - Business Language Program
Kevin Yang is the ultimate Chinese teacher. Originally from Taiwan, Kevin completed his studies at Brigham Young University (Hawaii) before being recruited by the US defence department to teach Mandarin Chinese at the Defence Language Institute in Monterey (California).
After moving to Australia in 2002, Kevin completed his Masters in Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne focusing on the acquisition of Chinese as a second language by non-native speakers. Kevin has extensive practical experience teaching Chinese at the Horwood Language Centre at the University of Melbourne.
Kevin brings extensive experience as a language teacher and his ability to explain the connection between culture and language. Growing up in Taiwan and having lived in two English-speaking countries for extended periods gives him a unique perspective on Chinese culture.
Ms. Julia Gong - Language Instructor
Julia Gong is an experienced language teacher, textbook writer and TV program hostess. She has 16 years' language teaching experience in both EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and LOTE (Language other than English). Due to excellent performance in her teaching career, she won the award of Outstanding Young Teacher of Beijing and the First Prize in the Teaching Techniques Competition in Beijing.
Julia finished her Bachelor Degree in Beijing, China, majoring in English. She completed her Master Degree in the Faculty of Education, the University of Melbourne. Her research interests are in the following areas: the teaching of second language speaking skills, cross-cultural communication and computer assisted language learning.
When Julia was teaching in Beijing, she was also invited to be the hostess and script-writer for numerous series of language teaching programs on TV and radio-more than 500 episodes altogether-which include Teaching Chinese to Foreigners, Go For it, Australian Middle School English, English Story Time, etc. She was also a textbook writer for primary, secondary and tertiary students.
During her study in Melbourne from 2000 to 2003, Julia also worked as translator and interpreter for Chinese delegations.
Ms. Lianying Hao - Language Instructor
Lianying is an experienced language teacher. She earned her Masters' Degree in Linguistics (focusing on comparison of Modalities of Chinese and Korean language) at Inha University, South Korea. During her stay in Korea, she instructed Chinese at Korean Chinese Academy, Seoul, one the top 3 Mandarin training providers in Korea, where she acquired extensive experience in teaching the language to learners at various levels ranging from beginners to advanced students. Due to her excellent teaching skills, she was recruited as a language training instructor at Samsung Electronics, Seoul, and Incheon Lawyers' office, Incheon, South Korea. Apart from that, she has also worked as an interpreter for MBC (Korean TV Channel) and Korean Regional Courts.
After moving to Australia in early 2008, Lianying has been teaching Chinese Language in different schools. She has also been involved in interpretation and translation.
Lianying brings along an energetic and outgoing personality. Together with her experience in teaching, she is able to make her class interactive and interesting, for which her students have regarded her as an admirable teacher.
