Economic and Business Round Table between Jiangsu Province and the State of Victoria

The Economic and Business Round Table between Jiangsu Province and the State of Victoria was held on October the 15th 2008 at Nanjing University, Jiangsu Province in China. The meeting focused on challenges faced today in the areas of water conservation and efficient water use. It is hoped that the discussion between the two parties shall identify areas for joint cooperation in the area of urban and industrial water, and that this cooperation may lead to joint projects between the University of Melbourne and Nanjing University, for the long-term benefit of both the State of Victoria and Jiangsu Province. Guests present at the meeting included the Vice Chancellor Professor Glyn David and Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Frank Larkins at the University of Melbourne, the Executive Vice-President Professor Shi Jianjun and Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Professor Zou Yajung of Nanjing University, Mr Li Chun Jiang Deputy Director of the Economic and Trade Commission as the representative of the Jiangsu Government, Mr Charles Brent, Commissioner to Greater China for the State Government of Victoria as well as scholars and experts in business and water-related issues. | Read more…

China Day - Discovery of Chinese Culture

The Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the University jointly held the Grant China Day event on the 9th of October 2008. Four programs were presented: Chinese Minority Group Fashion Show; Traditional Toys and Art-crafts; Introduction to Chinese Literature, Philosophy and History; Display and Work Shop of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy. Chinese dancing, the play of traditional Chinese musical instrument Xiao and sword walk were applauded by the audience. The Deputy Consul-General Madame Wang and the Education Consul Mr. Zhu from the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Melbourne attended the event. | Read more…

Melbourne Set to Host Chinese Teacher Training Centre

On September the 22nd, 2008, Education Minister of the Government of Victoria, Australia, Bronwyn Pike led a group in a visit to the Confucius Institute head office (National Han Ban), and signed the “Letter of Intent Concerning the Establishment of Chinese Teacher Training Centres in Victoria” with the Director of the National Hanban Madame Xu Lin. According to the Letter of Intent, National Hanban will cooperate with the Victorian Government in the establishment of Chinese Teacher Training Centre in Victoria, organization of trainings for Chinese teachers, compilation of new text books and researches on methods of teaching, thereby promoting the healthy and sustained development of Chinese language in Victoria. New free-trade harbor area approved for trade with ASEAN

HAIKOU -- The Chinese government has approved plans for the country's fourth harbor area with preferential tax rates in a major step towards a free trade zone with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
