Studying Chinese in China for Free - Confucius Institute Scholarship

To provide people around the world who are interested in Chinese language learning with more opportunities to further their studies, and to provide more resources for individual Confucius Institutes, the Confucius Institute Headquarters has set up the "Confucius Institute Scholarship" Program starting 2009.
People who are eligible for the application of the scholarship include:
- Outstanding students from Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) worldwide;
- Foreign teachers who are teaching or planning to teach Chinese as a second language;
- Students who received distinguished grade from the Chinese Examination series held by Confucius Institute Headquarters;
- Outstanding Contestants in "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition;
- Students studying Chinese as a second language in overseas universities or colleges;
- Applicants who meet the requirements of other of Confucius Institute Headquarters' agreements
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health.
The scholarships are both for short-term study and degrees, ie Bachelor's, Master's and Doctor's. The scholarship includes: Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fees for basic learning materials and accommodation on campus; monthly allowance; one-off settlement subsidy and comprehensive medical insurance and benefit plan for international students in China.
To apply for the scholarship, applicants are supposed to submit their application materials to the following institution:
- The Education (Culture) Department (Section) in local Chinese Embassy and Consulate overseas.
- Confucius Institutes worldwide
- Overseas Chinese Proficiency Tests Centres recognized by Confucius Institute Headquarters
- Other institutions specified by Confucius Institute Headquarters.
The scholarship will be offered every year. The due date for the application of the scholarship for 2009 is April 30th. Please contact the Confucius Institute at the University of Melbourne for further information.
